Damodar College, Margao and Don Bosco College, Panjim claimed the Men’s and Women’s title at the Inter College Futsal Championship 2016, organised by DCT’s SS Dempo College, Panjim and Don Bosco Oratory, Panjim from 19 th to 21 st July. Thirty colleges participated in the championship which was held on a league cum knock-out basis.
The tournament was organised on a league cum knock-out basis with 70 matches to finally emerge the Champion Men and Women College Team. On day one in Pool A, Xavier’s College (Mapusa), Damodar College (Margao), Sridora Caculo College of Commerce (Khorlim), and SS DEMPO (Altinho) moved to the quarterfinals in the men’s category and Carmel’s College (Nuvem) and SS Dempo (Altinho) moved to the Semi’s of the women’s Category. In the league matches, Damodar’s topped the pool winning all their matches defeating, Zantye’s, Xavier’s, Salgoancar and MES, while in Pool B, SS Dempo got the better of all the other teams of pool B.
In the women’s section, Carmel’s were the under defeated champions of the day, against SS Dempo, Vidya Prabhodini, Fr. Agnel’s and PCCE.
In the Men’s Semis Damodar had a comfortable win over Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, 5-1, and Xavier’s College, Mapusa pulled a thrilling win over Chowgule College 2-1, to secure their berth in the title clash. In the third place clash Don Bosco College of Engineering (DBCE) managed to subdue Chowgule’s (3-1) and in the women’s category, SS Dempo College defeated Govt College of Quepem 2-0.
In the women’s final, Carmel College, Nuvem opened the account by taking the lead in the first half, but Don Bosco College, Panjim was quick to respond with an equaliser within two minutes. Both teams were tied at the end of game time taking the match to penalty shootouts. Don Bosco College did well to keep their nerve and score on target taking the lead 2-1 to clinch the Women’s Futsal title.
In the Men’s category, Xavier’s and Damodar’s locked horns for the first half. But the moment Damodar’s found their form, they displayed skill and speed in controlling every move of the game with goals in quick succession. In the end Damodar was no match to Xavier’s as they clinched the Inter College title 5-2. Stephen of Damodar College and Nafisa Mendes of Don Bosco College were adjudged the Most Valuable players of the Mens and Women’s Category respectively. The Chief guest of the Finals was Shri. Sunil Prabhudesai, Administrator of Dempo Charities Trust, and the guests of honour were Dr. Radhika S Nayak, Principal SS Dempo College, and Fr. Loddy Pires, former Provincial of Mumbai and Panjim Provinces, and Director of the Shrine.
